About Me

This little laptop had plenty of expectations to live as much as — in a single video on my YouTube channel I called the reveal of the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros "magical." Now I know I throw that word round typically, but when you use a product that astonishes you, a product that makes you are feeling like magic is the only way to clarify how it can provide a lot value, reduce so much friction, resolve so many problems you deal with day in and day trip — what else are you alleged to call it?

We just surpassed the 15 12 months anniversary of Steve Jobs’s famous keynote the place he unveiled the original iPhone. In it he makes use of the word "magic" to explain how Multi-Contact works, and, back then, that is precisely what it felt like.

For me, that’s what this 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro has felt like during the last two month. And in this article I’m going to tell you why. To do that, we’re going to take a look on the problems I confronted repeatedly when utilizing my 2013 Mac Pro and my 2013 15" Retina MacBook Pro. How did this new MacBook Pro resolve those problems and make me feel like a new computer might really feel like magic once more? And the way did it its promise compel me to go back into debt to the tune of $three,000 — something I vowed I wouldn’t do because I might get by, even if painfully so, with my eight 12 months old 2013 Retina MacBook Pro?

Well let’s get into it.

BATTERY LIFE

On my 15" Retina MacBook Pro my battery would possibly final an hour or so earlier than I’d must cost it. You may be thinking, "Well after all — the battery’s 8 years old." But it isn’t. The battery was replaced as part of an Apple repair program a few years ago, so its health must be pretty much top notch. And it is.

However the laptop struggles to take action many primary things — multiple tabs in Safari, watching YouTube videos, editing and exporting pictures — just about anything remotely intensive would make the fans spin up like jet engines, and that may, in fact, lead to rapid battery drain. Little question taking the computer apart and removing the CPU and GPU, cleaning up the old thermal paste and applying new thermal paste, cleaning out the fans of dust, etc. may reduce this issue. Fine. Even so, I think it doesn't matter what I’d never go away my house without the ability cord. If I forgot it, I’d be screwed. Power cord anxiety — one in all many friction factors related with the battery life on my old MacBook Pro.

With my new MacBook Pro, I've zero anxiety about the battery life, and I also don’t should limit myself to what I work on if I’m out without the ability cord. I can edit in Final Cut Pro, edit and export pictures, work in Affinity Designer and Writer, watch movies on YouTube and the battery just lasts.

I usually find myself working at a coffee shop (Archetype Coffee in Omaha, Nebraska!) without thinking about sitting at the crappy table that I don’t like because it’s in direct sunlight or it’s by the door the place all the cold air blows in or the table isn’t level or whatever the problem is — I don’t need to sit there because that’s the place the outlet is. I can sit wherever I damn well please. And I’ll look down at my new notebook while I’m working, and it’s just the notebook; there’s no silly cord hanging off of it, awkwardly draped over the table and mendacity on the dirty floor. It’s just a clean, simple setup — me and the notebook. No friction. The ability to just lose myself in the inventive flow and concentrate on my work.

So, that’s a huge problem that this new MacBook Pro solves. And that’s how it should be. And Apple knows it. And that’s why they ditched Intel and made their own chipsets; a more efficient CPU/GPU equals longer battery life.
