Fort Greble Park

The Equipment
Fort Greble is not for the faint of heart.  However, it is an amazing way of reenacting through play how this once Civil War-era fort existed.  “The Contraband Camp” features a structure with a slide, two seated and one elevated spinner.  Alongside are four slides in a row on a hill.  At the top of “The Lookout” you may be able to see the Anacostia River.  There are two slides of varying sizes.  Behind The Lookout on the other side of the hill is a suspension bridge and large rope cargo net.  Set on astro turf, this is a physical park that requires some endurance, but I promise it is worth the view.
The Scene
If you’re looking for a new experience, take your children to Fort Greble Park, which is down the road from the Naval Research Lab.  Opened in 2013, it’s worth reading about the historical inspiration that created this play space.  Along with a playground and recreation center, there are lighted basketball courts and athletic fields, community garden, picnic pavilion, water fountains, small sprayground and lots of green space.  The playground is not fenced, but it is not near the road either and is a comfortable distance from the parking lot.
