The fitness industry is booming. So why are P.E. classes disappearing?

The Washington Post's take on the phenomenon.

According to the IHRSA (International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association), the $30 billion health and fitness industry in the U.S. has been growing by at least 3 – 4% annually for the last ten years and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. About 20% of American adults have a fitness club membership.

So why are PE classes less popular than ever? Check out this interesting take in the Washington Post.

Some flavor:

“Physical education, intended as a noncompetitive class open to all students, exists apart from the competitive sports often at the center of such campus debates. But these attitudes inform curricular conversations that marginalize physical education even as the importance of regular exercise, and the booming private industry that provides it to those who can afford to participate, has exploded.”
