Banneker Park
The Equipment
The playground itself is not shaded, but there are benches under a large umbrella. There are several structures that intertwine here. From a spinning sphere you stand on, to several modern climbing pieces of equipment, there is also a cargo net and two bright orange slides. A three story structure has a rock wall, twisted branches to climb up, a standard slide and a spiral slide. There’s also a giant spider web and zip line, Neos electronic game. At the other end of the playground is a swing set with 1 bucket, 1 special needs and 2 standard ones.
The Scene
Banneker is across from Howard University. It got a facelift in 2014 and has a great playground that is fenced and has a rubber surface. The park also features a community center, outdoor pool, athletic track, football and baseball field, basketball and tennis courts, a small skate park and water fountain. There is a parking lot by the pool although metered street parking is closer if you are only visiting the playground. Just to note: a homeless person’s belongings were on the ground inside the playground. I felt safe when I was there with my child.
